Welcome Math 10.MP1 Students

Probably none of us expected a totally online class, me included. Getting started this quarter will require all of us to be patient and flexible. Some of you may be concerned about taking a math class online. Let me try to alleviate some of the concerns. I will try to make the class close to a face-to-face experience, given the situation. First of all, the class will be synchronous. This is a fancy word for live lectures, meeting at the normal times posted in the class schedule: daily, 8:30 am – 10:20 am. Instead of meeting in MLC108 (my personal favorite) we will meet in a Zoom classroom.

What about the extra tutoring MPS classes offer? A virtual tutor room will be available in Zoom operating during the same hours as during a normal session. Details will be forth coming. As a senior, I am on a stricter lock down policy than the general public. Good news for you. This means I am very available to work with you individually, in small groups, or even the entire class if that is what the students want. I was able to get some practice time in at the end of last quarter with individual one-on-one sessions, small groups and the entire class using Zoom, my makeshift document camera and screen sharing from students and from me. Not as good as working together in person, but it worked very well.

There are likely more distractions attending class from home. You will probably hear my dogs announce the delivery of packages and the mail. I will be recording our class meetings and posting them online, so you can go back later and review things you missed or want to hear again.

The way I normally teach this class facilitates transition from a face-to-face to totally online format. For example, I already use WebAssign an online homework system, so my students will become accustomed to online assignments. No change here. The textbook I use is available for free online. The eBook can be viewed from within WebAssign, in Canvas or downloaded. I have prepared a set of notes for each chapter, emphasizing the information I feel is most important. In class we will go through these notes, which contain questions, examples and problems that we will work together as a group. These notes are embedded in this Canvas Class. You can view them in Canvas or download them to your personal device. I usually put a blank copy of the notes on the classroom document camera and write the class solutions on them as we collectively development the answers. After each class I will scan in my notes and post them in the Canvas Module for the chapter, so they are available to everyone. I have fashioned a document camera out of gadgets at my house that might not be as good as the classroom equipment, but it works good enough given the circumstances. During our live lectures I will switch between cameras and share my desktop as we go through the notes.
