Module 4 Activity: Part 2

Part 2 of this Activity is going to be centered around a video about solar eclipses.

David Makepeace, a film editor in Toronto, Ontario, is a dedicated eclipse chaser. Starting with an eclipse in Baja California, Mexico in 1991, he's been traveling all around the world to see total solar eclipses, and he makes films about his travels.

In early 2017, as the "Great American Eclipse" was coming up, he posted Still Hooked on Vimeo.

In this Part of the Module 4 activity, you'll watch David's video and answer questions about it. Answering the questions will also involve looking up information about the Sun and about eclipses. You'll be pausing the video a lot and using the time `scrubber' to rewatch certain sections. I recommend watching it once through from beginning to end, then going back and checking the sections that are mentioned in the questions.

So, before we get to the link to Still Hooked, here are some resources and information that will be helpful:

• Figure 4.21 in the textbook will be useful, because it explains the various parts of a shadow.
• There will be questions about which parts of the Sun can be seen at various times during the eclipse. This NASA webpage about the 2017 eclipse will be helpful. If you read it carefully, you'll be able to figure out the answers to the questions about the different parts of the Sun.
• You might also find it helpful to look at Section 15.1 in the textbook, which illustrates the different parts of the Sun.
