The Endeavour Vents: An Oasis of Life on Earth's Cold, Dark Seafloor
Running through the Earth's ocean floors is a system of plate boundaries called the mid-ocean ridges. A portion of the global mid-ocean ridge system lies offshore of the U.S. Pacific Northwest and southwestern Canada. One area is called the Endeavour Ridge, and it has a number of hydrothermal vents located along it. These vents are exciting to astrobiologists, because they show that an ecosystem can exist where the primary source of energy isn't sunlight.
For these questions, you'll find the answers in this video from Ocean Networks Canada
If you want to chill out to more cool footage of the Endeavour ridge, you can watch this video, too, for fun: Endeavour 2013
Don't forget - the light you see in these videos is not sunlight! It's just the light from the remotely-operated submersibles that scientists use to explore these areas.
