Grades
This is a graded class. Grades will be based on overall attendance, participation in class discussions and projects, spelling quizzes, professional conduct and all homework assignments. A "C“ Average is required to pass the class.
Current Events Discussions: Students are expected to share at least 1 current event every two weeks with the class taking into account the "Who, What, When, Where and Why," of the story. This can be about the weather, sports, new music, new movies, events around the world, an educational or funny YouTube video to share. Students are graded on their participation in this part of the class.
Spelling Test: Students will be given three spelling tests during the quarter. Each week I write the word on the chalkboard and then create a video based on the meaning of the word. Students are asked to write the words of the month in their notebooks. Tests are open book for those who have difficulty with memorization.
Special Accommodations: Please let this instructor know if you require special accommodations at the beginning of this class. Together we will contact Disabled Students Support Services and determine what reasonable accommodations are available and appropriate.
Student Code of Classroom Conduct
We will review the De Anza college,” Code of Conduct,” for students during the first week of class with a video presentation and discussion. After that any student that disrupts class will be given one verbal reminder to follow the rules of conduct unless the behavior is dangerous at which point the student will be asked to leave the classroom immediately. If the disruption continues the student will be asked to leave the classroom and appropriate remedial and/or disciplinary steps will be taken. This could include dismissal from the class dependent on the severity of misconduct.
Quizzes and Exams
If a quiz or homework packet is missed, it is up to you, the student, to contact this instructor to make up the quiz and/or pick up a homework packet to complete. It is expected that you will inform me in advance if you will be absent.
Homework
A homework packet will be assigned every other week on Tuesday afternoon which is expected to be returned to this instructor before the next assignment will be given. (So, students have two weeks to complete the assignments). Verbal reminders for homework packet due dates will be given to students by this instructor. Packets will be corrected, graded and handed back to each student within two weeks. Homework is expected to be turned in on time and will count towards your final grade. This instructor will meet with each student to go over progress on the homework assignments answer questions and provide extra help that may be needed. Because you will receive verbal
reminders as to when your homework is due, I will not accept late assignments unless
you have made previous arrangements with me.
