Welcome Math 10.MP2 and .MPR Students

Since COVID, I have been teaching online. Spring 2024 was my first quarter back in the classroom after four long years in Zoom. I am looking forward to seeing live smiling faces instead of black rectangles with white letters in the center. Our class meets Monday through Thursday, 9:30 am to 11:20 pm and I expect you to be there on time. We will be in MLC-112 this quarter. The MLC has the best classrooms on Campus. You will see why in the coming days and weeks.

We also have a two-hour online TBD time which you will complete outside of class. This assignment will consist of viewing combinations of video instructions on using our calculators, example solutions to homework, quiz or midterm exam problems. In some cases, the assignment may include video or written information about topics that need more explanation than time permitted during the classroom lectures.

What about the extra tutoring MPS classes offer? A virtual tutor room will also be available in Zoom. In-person tutoring will also be available. Details will be forth coming. As a senior, I am more conservative with my travels than the general public. Good news for you. This means I am very available to work with you individually, in small groups, or even the entire class if that is what the students want at various times throughout the day. Each previous quarter has been a warmup for the current class. I held individual one-on-one sessions, small group sessions and the entire class using Zoom. Not as good as working together in person, but it worked very well.

The normally teach this class using WebAssign an online homework system, so my students will become accustomed to online assignments. This quarter I am anticipating using an online system called MathGPT. As you might guess MathGPT is one of the generative AI applications. I will refer to MathGPT as MG, so I don't have to type so much. MG has been trained on our textbook. You can read the chapters and sections of the book online an ask questions about the material to get a better understanding. We will also be doing our homework in MG. The advantage of MG over other online homework systems is that you can request AI tutoring as you work your problems. MG will not just hand you the answer, it will lead you to the solution, by suggesting the steps that get you there. There will be no charge for MG.

The textbook I use is available for free online. The eBook can be viewed from within WebAssign, in Canvas or downloaded. I have prepared a set of notes for each chapter, emphasizing the information I feel is most important. In class we will go through these notes, which contain questions, examples and problems that we will work together as a group. These notes are also embedded in this Canvas Class. You will be receiving a copy of the Class Notes Binder on the first day of class. You can also view the notes in Canvas or download them to your personal device. I usually put a blank copy of the notes on the classroom document camera and write the class solutions on them as we collectively develop the answers. After each class I will scan in my notes and post them in the Canvas Module for the chapter, so they are available to everyone.
